Woman’s message to ‘angel on Earth’ who helped her mum

A woman has thanked the NHS ‘angel’ who went above and beyond his duties to assist her mum at Whiston Hospital.

Carol Lanny O’brien took her mum, whose name is also Carol O'brien, to Whiston Hospital on Tuesday, October 12 after she woke on Tuesday morning to discover she could not walk and was in significant pain.

From the minute of her arrival, Carol said that her 75-year-old mum was seen to with calmness and ‘total respect’ despite the ‘calamity of A&E’.

Carol, who runs the Queens Arms in St Helens, told the ECHO : "The wait was lengthy and very very crowded but eventually we were seen by Johnny.

"He took her bloods and made sure she was administered pain relief before we moved on with anymore treatment - there were not enough staff or rooms to accommodate what was going on around us but he made it like she was the only person on the planet that mattered."

Carol said that thanks to Johnny's compassion her mum never noticed what was going on around her and his care helped to keep her calm and reassured at all times.

The 41-year-old paid thanks to the nurse on a community Facebook page where she explained the events of the night and said that the nurse - who said his name was Johnny - even stayed after his shift had finished to assure the family were ‘seen to properly’.

The St Helens woman added: “I overheard his conversation with another staff member, he was asked what time he finishes and he replied he had finished at 8pm but was waiting for us to find out her blood results and to see how things progressed and was back on shift the next day at 8am..

"It was overwhelming.. He stayed until the results came and helped drain my mums knee of fluid to relive the pressure, he was there right until we were discharged."

Carol said she is so grateful and is eager to identify Johnny, who she described as a man in his late 20’s, tall with dark hair and further labelled him an "absolute star on Earth".

She said: "He probably won't even know how much it touched us as a family as my mum is our absolute world we are so lucky to still have her and thanks to his help she is with us another day - to run us ragged!"

The Facebook post has been liked by over 400 people and people across St Helens have applauded the work of the nurse and the NHS as a whole with many echoing Carol’s ‘angel’ label.

One person commented on the post with: “There are caring NHS workers who still put patients first and care for them with the care that made the NHS famous. I'm so glad you've had a positive experience. To all NHS workers THANK YOU ALL!”

Another wrote: “A&E in Whiston are the absolute best.... amazing & unbelievably intelligent.”
