Woman's ingenious hack to calm dogs during fireworks using household items

A woman has come up with a brilliant hack to protect her dog from the shock of fireworks after exhausting all other methods.

Dawn Holmes, from Cheshire but living in Rhuddlan in north Wales, posted a video of her DIY solution which only requires two household items, a pair of tights and cotton wool.

She explained her dog, Hosay, had become “very badly affected” by the sounds of fireworks in the week leading up to bonfire night, a problem she only expected to get worse.

Dawn attempted turning the TV on and giving Hosay his comfort blanket but to no avail. In a flash of brilliance, she decided to try a headscarf made out of a pair of thick tights and cotton wool.

In the video, Dawn demonstrates how to make the headpiece for her dog Hosay. She says Hosay has become accustomed to wearing it.

Dawn gently places the cotton wool beneath the dogs’ ears and wraps the tights around his head to secure it in place.

Dawn claims it muffles his hearing which helps him to cope with the fireworks.

Speaking to North Wales Live , Dawn says, “To see a dog so distressed it is so upsetting for an animal lover. I thought there has got to be an inexpensive solution.

"My dog is very badly affected by fireworks and I'd tried several things in the past like turning up the TV or giving him a snuggle blanket but that didn't work so I tried this at the weekend and it helped a lot.

"All you need is a pair of thick tights, some cotton wool and a pair of scissors. It may take a few tries to get them used to it, but it's worth it when the fireworks come. I hope it can help other people's dogs as well."
