Woman's fire death ruled homicide

March 23--A Monday autopsy determined that the death of a woman injured in a suspicious fire earlier this month was a homicide.

Margaret Noble, 79, of the 300 block of South Albany Avenue, died of carbon monoxide intoxication and inhalation of smoke and soot from the fire at her home, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. A secondary cause of death was heart disease. Her death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner's office.

Noble, whose son was also injured in the blaze, was pronounced dead at 5:21 p.m. Saturday at RML Specialty Hospital in Hinsdale, according to the medical examiner's office.

The blaze started around 3:05 a.m. March 8 in a coach house in the city's East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side, said Chicago Fire Department Cmdr. Frank Velez at the time.

Noble, who lived with her son, was initially taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, and her son, in his 40s, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, said police and fire officials.

Police dogs found accelerant on the scene of the blaze, which is believed to be arson, according to police at the time.

Two unknown offenders were seen running from the scene, police said at the time.

A fire erupted on the same block earlier the week of the blaze, and no arrests have been made, police said at the time.
