Man, 88, charged with murder of woman at Melbourne aged care facility

Martin Luther Homes said it was cooperating with police.

Victorian police have charged a man, aged 88, with murder following the death of an 87-year-old woman at a retirement village in Melbourne's east.

The man is scheduled to appear in Melbourne Magistrate's court today.

Police were called to the facility in Mount View Road, The Basin, about 12:40pm Wednesday.

They arrested the man at the scene.

Homicide detectives were called in to investigate the death.

The operator of the facility, Martin Luther Homes, said it would fully cooperate with police.

"The sad passing of a woman who lived in our independent living retirement village today has saddened all our staff, residents and families," it said in a statement.

"On behalf of everyone at Martin Luther Homes we extend our deepest sympathies to family and friends."

According to its website, Martin Luther Homes is a Lutheran Church-based, not-for-profit nursing home and independent living village.

Peter Austen, who lives near the facility, said he was "totally shocked" by the woman's death.

"Nothing ever happens around here, especially next door — it's just so quiet," he said.
