Woman's clever towel trick that can reduce tumble dryer costs and run time

As the cost of living continues to rise, people are looking for ways to cut down on consumption. Whether it's pouring less water into the kettle or using the washing machine at the right time of day, there are many smart and thrifty hacks.

One trick that was shared on social media involves using a towel to cut down on tumble dryer use. The clever hack was shared by TikTok user @refinedliving, who regularly shares home cleaning tips with their whopping 480,000 followers.

The clip - which has been viewed tens of thousands of times - left several users keen to try out the drying trick. The simple process involved loading your regular washing into the dryer alongside a dry towel.

The dry towel would absorb some of the moisture from your freshly washed clothes which leaves the tumble dryer with less work to do. This means that your tumble dryer is on for a shorter period of time, which could cut down running costs.

The TikTok user explained: "Wet clothes and need them to dry faster? Simply add a dry towel for the first 15 minutes!"

The cleaning ace claims that the simple trick speeds up the drying process by 30 percent. This comes as research from Uswitch estimates a tumble dryer uses roughly 4.5kWh of energy per cycle, which translates to around 67p per cycle, or just shy of £105 per year.

Social media fans took to the comments praising the simple hack. Some also added some advice of their own.

One user said: "This is facts I discovered this on accident," while another commented: "It works!!! I use this life hack on heavy items like terry robes and quilts. I don’t take it out tho."

A third added: "Wow that's smart where did you find this I never would have thought about that".
