Woman's chilling last text to mum moments before plummeting to her death off mountain

A woman plummeted to her death after climbing to the top of a mountain - just moments after she sent a gushing text to her mum.

Rebecca Aretini, 28, fell to her death in front of her boyfriend in the Apuan Alps above the Monte Macina valley on Monday, August 22.

Local authorities said there was nothing that could be done to save the passionate hiker and climber after she fell hundreds of metres to her death.

Although rescuers were quickly on the scene, the location of the body was very difficult to reach.

In addition, the weather conditions meant there was also low cloud cover making it difficult for a helicopter to operate.

The victim lived in Mercatale, a village located in the municipality of San Casciano in Val di Pesa, in the Metropolitan City of Florence, in the Italian region of Tuscany.

One of her favourite sayings was "great things are done when men and mountains meet" quoting the English poet William Blake.

After news of her tragic death in front of her boyfriend was made public, her mother Elisabetta said she had been in contact with her daughter almost up until she fell to her death.

She said: "She had recently returned from an excursion with her boyfriend from the Aosta Valley.

"The trip up the Apuan Alps was the last one they had to do.

"She had sent me a photo of the mountains and said 'Mom, if you could see how beautiful it is from up here'.

"I pray so much that she didn't suffer. It still doesn't seem real to me."
