Woman's cause of death 'inconclusive' as murder suspects released by police

Residents living in a road where the body of a woman was discovered said she was "well known in the area".

Emergency services descended on Belmont Road in Anfield yesterday with a large police scene focused outside one of the flats.

The woman was named locally as Tracey McGrath and neighbours said she had lived in the property for a number of years.

Belmont Road is largely made up of large terraced properties which have been sub-divided into rented flats.

This morning all traces of the police presence yesterday had been removed. No floral tributes had so far been left outside the property which was the focus of attention for officers and forensic teams.

One neighbour, who didn't wish to be named, said the 58-year-old woman was a familiar sight in the area.

He said: "You ask anyone round here, they know her.

"I was getting text messages off my kids who saw it in the ECHO wanting to know what had happened."

Another said: "The first I knew about it was when I saw police everywhere. It's very sad."

A man who was outside one of the flats nearby said: "I only heard about it yesterday. It's a real shame."

Ms McGrath was discovered in an upper floor flat at about 8.30pm on Wednesday, sparking an urgent response.

Her body was found on a sofa in the living room and it is believed she had died a number of days prior to police being called.

Police said today a Home Office post mortem examination had proved "inconclusive" so the incident was being treated as unexplained while enquiries continued.

Five people arrested yesterday (Thursday) on suspicion of murder have now all been released.

A 33-year-old man from Anfield was released on bail, while a 22-year-old man from Anfield, a 30-year-old man from Liverpool, and a 29-year-old woman from Fairfield have been released under investigation.

A 44-year-old man from Anfield arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender has also been released under investigation.
