Police in the remote mining town of Newman, in Western Australia's Pilbara, are investigating after a body was found outside the local hospital.

The young woman is understood to have very recently given birth to her second child.

Police said they were called to Newman Hospital in the early hours of this morning.

Takeaway alcohol sales have been banned in the town for the rest of the day.

Newman police are working in conjunction with South Hedland detectives.

Police say a person is now in custody in relation to the incident.

Police have asked anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or by making a report to Crime Stoppers online.
