Woman's body found in Leeds and Liverpool Canal

A woman's body has been found in the Leeds and Liverpool canal.

Police have confirmed that they made the sad discovery at the weekend and called off the search for a missing Lancashire woman.

Christine Clarke, 51 had been last seen alive on 5.30am on Saturday on the A6 near to Frederick's Ice Cream in Chorley.

Lancashire Police said a body had been recovered from the Leeds Liverpool Canal close to Frederick's on Sunday.

A spokesman said: "While formal identification has yet to be carried out, it is believed to be Christine. Her family have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this incredibly difficult time."

On Sunday, Lancashire Police had said they were "growing increasingly concerned" for her welfare.

A spokesman added: "We would like to thank everyone who responded to our appeal to find Christine.

"Her death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be passed to HM Coroner in due course."
