Woman's body found by walkers in wooded area

A woman's body was found by walkers in a wooded area this afternoon.

Officers from Merseyside Police could be seen looking through a grassy area close to the junction of East Lancs Road and Lower Lane in Croxteth.

A spokesman for the force confirmed emergency services attended the scene after a body was found earlier this afternoon.

In a statement shared with the ECHO, the force spokesman said: "At around 3pm, a call was received that a woman's body was found in a wooded area near to the junction of East Lancs Road and Lower Lane.

"Enquiries are ongoing to identify the woman and notify her next of kin. A cordon will be in place as this work continues."

The ECHO understands the woman's body was discovered by walkers who were out in the area this afternoon.

The area where the body was found is close to Croxteth's Stonedale Retail Park, which contains the Showcase Cinema and fast food outlets which have all remained closed under lockdown.

Photos taken at the scene show a large white forensics tent erected in a clearing between some of the trees.

A Merseyside Police van can be seen parked nearby, with police tape cordoning off the immediate area as officers guard the scene.
