The woman was rushed to hospital after the assault to receive treatment for a fractured arm.
She later required surgery for her injuries.
Merseyside police have now issued a CCTV clip of a man and woman who they wish to speak to about the incident.
Officers believe that the two people may have more information about the assault.
CCTV and witness enquiries were carried out by officers after the assault was reported and detectives have issued a CCTV video clip they believe could help with the investigation.
Detective Constable Nikki Summers said: "This was a violent attack by a man on a young woman that has left her with a fractured arm that later required surgery and several bruises.
"I am appealing to anyone who recognises the woman and man in this clip, to come forward.
"We believe they could hold vital information that could help our continuing enquiries.
"The incident happened a few days after Christmas during a busy time of the night when people would have been leaving bars and pubs in the area.
"If you were on or near Sir Thomas Street at around 12.45am and witnessed the incident or anything suspicious and have captured images of the couple on Wednesday morning, please contact police as a matter of urgency."
