Woman rushed to hospital after being hit by falling sign outside M&S in Glasgow street

A woman has been taken to hospital after being hit by a falling shop sign in Glasgow.

Emergency services were called to Argyll Street shortly before 3pm after high winds dislodged the sign outside Marks & Spencer.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a “loud bang” as the shop sign hit the floor, injuring two people.

One woman has been taken to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary but her condition is unknown.

The area is currently cordoned off by police.

Images on social media show the sign having been ripped off above the entrance of the store.

The Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed they were called to the busy shopping street.

A spokesperson said: “We received a call at 2.55pm today to attend an incident on Argyll Street in Glasgow. We dispatched one ambulance crew to the scene.”

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "Around 3pm on Friday 21 February 2020, police received a report of a two people being injured after being struck by debris falling from a High Street Store in Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow.

"Emergency services are in attendance. One woman has been taken to hospital and the area is cordoned off".

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service also confirmed they were in attendance having received the call at 2.58pm. They have two appliances on the scene.
