Woman runs half marathon for charity

A woman ran the Edinburgh half-marathon to support the hospital that saved her mum’s life.

Claire Longridge completed the course in two hours 15 minutes and raised £1250 for the intensive care unit (ICU) in St John’s Hospital.

Her mum went to the hospital with chest pains in 2017. She was put in an induced coma and the family were told she had a one-in-five chance of survival.

Claire said: “The work that the staff at the hospital do is incredible and not only for our family but on a daily basis.

“The support they give the families of the patients is incredible.

“We were able to phone up at any point in the day or night to receive an update.”

Claire ran the marathon alongside her friend Derek Smith, her brother Jason Longridge, and his girlfriend Elle Coulter.

She said: “Mum was at Mile 12, cheering us on with my dad, and they then came and met us at the reunion area where we hugged and got photos.

“All in all an amazing experience to help raise money for St John’s and also a physical challenge for ourselves, which we felt great to have achieved.

“Hopefully it will be a full marathon next in a few years.”
