A "nasty" and "scary" incident led to jail for a man who stole a woman's bag from her late at night on the tram in Nottingham.
Jamiel Ali Haq, 28, of no fixed address, was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court after being found guilty of robbery.
Nottinghamshire Police have revealed more details into the incident which happened at around 10.50pm on June 29 on a tram in Hyson Green.
The tram wasn't very busy at that time, so the victim had room to place her bag on the seat next to her. It contained her purse, which had her bank cards and cash.
Haq had a bottle of vodka in his hand and was walking up and down the tram, police revealed.
He then attempted to speak to the woman, waving his hand in front of her, but she tried to ignore him.
The victim had her headphones in and distracted herself by using her phone as she didn't want to engage with him.
As the tram stopped at Radford Road Tram Stop, he grabbed her bag. The woman tried to keep hold of it, but he used his force to pull the bag before running off despite her best efforts.
The woman chased him, but he continued running down an alleyway where she lost sight of him. The woman then quickly dialled 999 to report the incident. She was not hurt.
Haq was jailed for two years for the robbery.
Detective Constable Natasha Ullyatt, from the force’s dedicated robbery team, said: "This was a nasty incident which must have been very scary for the woman involved.
"We'd like to praise the victim who has worked closely with officers throughout the investigation.
"We are pleased with the result and we hope it gives the woman some closure. Thankfully no one was injured in the incident.
"We do not tolerate thieving and I am pleased that Haq has been removed from our streets, reflecting the seriousness of his crime.
“Robberies and burglaries affect people’s lives and we will continue to work with our community to ensure they feel safe.”
