Woman 'risk lives' over fire safety failings at Bristol flats

A Pilning woman faces sentence after admitting risking tenants' lives at a multi-occupancy Bristol property.

The case of Jayne Brown was heard at Bristol Magistrates' Court on December 2 last year.

Brown, 51, of Whitehouse Lane, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly in Taunton on June 16 last year and was handed a 12-month conditional discharge.

She also pleaded guilty to breaching a prohibition notice regarding a premises in Prince Street, Bristol, between August 16 and 28, 2019.

That matter was sent to Bristol Crown Court for sentence today. (February 5, 2021)

Brown was the leaseholder of a substantial house in multiple occupation (HMO) at 57 Prince Street.

Fire Authority officials attended the premises in June, 2019, and made observations about fire safety measures in place.

On August 16, 2019, a fire safety audit was conducted, revealing the premises was not safe to be used as sleeping accommodation and identifying multiple fire safety failings.

As a consequence the Fire Authority served a prohibition notice immediately, restricting use of the premises not to be used for sleeping or resting.

But follow up inspections on August 19 and 22 2019 revealed a breach of the notice in that residents were still sleeping there.

It was apparent Brown had not complied with the notice.

Brown was due to be sentenced today but the court was told she had not attended due to illness.

Judge William Hart adjourned the case for sentence at the court on February 23 at 2pm.
