Woman rescues baby abandoned in storm drain

A woman has been captured on video rescuing a baby who was dumped in a storm drain in Chennai, India.

The rescuer, named only as Geeta, heard a crying sound from the drain and investigated, thinking it was a kitten or puppy.

She then discovered a naked baby boy and pulled him out.

The baby, who still had his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck, had been abandoned and was found lying between two pipes on 15 August.

He is now recovering in hospital.

Geeta said: “I saw the baby lying in between two small pipes inside a cemented drain.

“He was covered with dirt and insects.”

Geeta washed the newborn and took him to a nearby hospital, before he was moved to a children’s hospital in the Chennai suburb, Egmore.

Doctors said he has recovered and police are investigating.

A police spokesperson said: “We are checking the hospitals for deliveries and also scanning CCTV footage in the area to find out, who abandoned the baby and how he landed inside the drain.”
