Woman rescued from Stalybridge canal 'jumped in as police arrived'

A woman who was rescued from a Tameside canal had jumped in as police arrived to deal with another incident, the force says.

Emergency services rushed to Stalybridge town centre on Monday night (April 26) to rescue a woman from the Huddersfield Narrow Canal at Armentieres Square, near Trinity Street.

Greater Manchester Police has now confirmed that the woman, aged 30, had jumped into the canal as officers arrived to deal with a disturbance at a nearby property.

The woman has since been arrested on suspicion of a public order offence.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "At around 9.30pm on Monday (April 26), police were called to reports of a disturbance at an address on Castle Hall Court, Stalybridge.

"On police arrival a 30-year-old woman jumped into a nearby canal.

"Emergency services attended and a 30-year old woman was detained and taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.

"She has since been discharged from hospital and arrested on suspicion of a public order offence."

Crews spent an hour at the scene rescuing the woman on Monday night before she was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Firefighters and specialist rescue teams from across Greater Manchester were all sent out to come to her aid.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "Just after 9:30pm on Monday (April 26), two fire engines from Ashton-under-Lyne and Mossley fire stations, as well as the technical response unit from Leigh and the water incident unit from Heywood, were called to reports of a person in water near to Trinity Street, Stalybridge.

"Firefighters arrived quickly at the scene and, working with colleagues from North West Ambulance Service (NWAS), used a nine-metre ladder and rope rescue equipment to rescue one person from the water.

"GMFRS crews were at the scene for around one hour."
