Woman rescued from house fire by brave teenager has died

An elderly woman who was rescued from a house fire by a brave teenager has died.

The fire broke at around 4pm on Thursday at a house in Baglan, Neath Port Talbot.

The 78-year-old woman was trapped inside the property, which had smoke pouring out of it and was spotted by teenager Marcus Evans.

Marcus, 19, was on his way home from the local shop and, upon seeing a PCSO outside the house, went over to help. Having gone in once but been forced back by the intensity of the smoke, he then went back in to bring out the unconscious woman before firefighters arrived at the scene.

The woman was taken to hospital for treatment due to the extent of injuries, but died on Monday.

Marcus has been praised by his local community for the bravery he showed in rescuing the woman from her house. He was also given a reward by a local charity who helped his family when his mother became ill with cancer and died two years ago.

Speaking on Sunday, he said: "“I couldn’t save my own mother so I wanted to save somebody else’s.

“I was just focusing on getting her out of the house and I just wanted to do what I could. "

The woman who died as a result of the house fire has not been named, but her family has been made aware.

A spokeswoman for South Wales Police said: “We can confirm that the 78-year-old lady rescued from a house fire in Baglan on Thursday (May 6) passed away on Monday. Her next of kin have been informed.”

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway but officers are not treating the incident as suspicious.
