Woman rescued after falling in the Tyne from Millennium Bridge

A woman was brought to safety after falling into the Tyne from the Millennium Bridge on Sunday.

Emergency services were seen on the Quayside shortly after 4pm, when a rescue operation took place.

The woman was helped out of the water and taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 4.23pm this afternoon to Newcastle Quayside, next to the Millenium Bridge, to a person who had been in the water.

"We dispatched two double crewed ambulances and our hazardous area response team, and took a female patient to the Royal Victoria Infirmary A&E."

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said the force had received a call from a member of the public about a woman who had been on the Millennium Bridge.

The spokesperson added: "We attended that location along with the fire service and the ambulance service.

"We assisted the female in conjunction with the other services and our involvement ended with the female being taken to hospital by the ambulance service."
