Woman requires medical attention after blaze at Edinburgh flats

One woman required urgent medical attention after fire at a block of flats in Edinburgh last night.

Emergency services raced to Spey Terrace, Leith, just after 10pm on Sunday evening as residents scrambled to get out of the nine-floor building.

Around 30 firefighters battled the inferno and safely put out the blaze before making the area safe for locals to return.

One female casualty was passed on to ambulance crews at the scene and it is understood she was treated for smoke inhalation.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 10.11pm on Sunday, May 30 to reports of a fire within a high rise block of flats at Spey Terrace, Leith, Edinburgh.

“Operations Control immediately mobilised four appliances and an aerial rescue pump to the scene and firefighters extinguished a fire within a flat.

“One female casualty was passed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service and crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson added: “Around 10.20pm on Sunday, 30 May, 2021, emergency services were called to the report of a fire within a flat on Inchkeith Court, Spey Terrace, in Edinburgh.

“The fire was extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and local residents were evacuated for a short period of time.

“The fire is not being treated as suspicious.”
