Woman remains in hospital after being hit by a tram near Piccadilly station

A woman remains in hospital after being struck by a tram in Manchester city centre.

The collision happened on Sheffield Street near Piccadilly station at around 5:15pm on Friday evening.

A Metrolink tram which had just left the Piccadilly stop and had emerged from the tunnel underneath the station bound for New Islington when it collided with the woman who was on foot.

An eyewitness on the tram said the driver applied the emergency brakes and passengers were thrown forward with several people falling over as a result.

They were allowed off the tram as emergency services raced to the aid of the woman, who was later taken to hospital.

Today Greater Manchester Police confirmed the 24 year-old remains in a stable condition in hospital but that her injuries are not life threatening.

"No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing."

The eyewitness told the Manchester Evening News: "There was a girl in front of the tram and she got struck. It looked like she was hit with some force.

"The driver came out and asked if anyone knew first aid. He didn’t say why at first. But eventually the front door was opened to let us all off and you could see her on the floor.

"There was a damage to the front of the tram. The emergency services weren’t there when I left but I could hear the sirens.

"It was pretty distressing I really hope she’s okay.”

Trams on the Eccles-Ashton line were suspended between Piccadilly and Clayton Hall for over an hour whilst police dealt with the aftermath and carried out enquiries.
