Woman refused to attend friend's wedding over bride's 'selfish' last-minute rule

A woman was praised online after she refused to attend one of her close friend's weddings when the bride introduced an "unfair", last-minute rule for guests. The anonymous woman slammed the bride-to-be after she requested all guests follow a very specific dress code to match the "aesthetic" of her big day.

She asked for all men to be dressed in a full black tie suit while the women were required to be in a floor-length purple or rose gown with only two weeks' notice, The Mirror reports. The bridezilla gave her pal an ultimatum - either stick to the rules for wedding attire or don't turn up.

The woman chose the latter, after refusing to follow the strict dress code. But she was then branded "selfish" by the devastated bride-to-be.

The clothing rule - and the guest's decision - sparked a debate on social media after the angry friend took to Reddit to explain the situation. In a post, she wrote: "I don't own any floor-length gowns. I asked the bride if it would be okay to wear a knee-length dress with dressy shoes, but she insisted that I follow the dress code or not attend the wedding at all."

The friend explained the wedding was initially meant to be six months away but the groom is travelling abroad for work soon, so the big day had to be brought forward to two weeks' time. She said that, due to the short notice, she doesn't have the time to save up for a new fancy dress - but the bride was not satisfied with her decision and accused her of being "unsupportive".

She wrote: "I decided that I didn't want to spend a lot of money that I don't have, on a dress I would never wear again, and so I politely declined the invitation. She got angry and accused me of being selfish and unsupportive.

"She said that I should have made an effort to follow her dress code, as it was important to her to have a certain aesthetic for her wedding. And that she informed me earlier so she feels I should have made preparations towards it."

The bride-to-be also asked her friend to rent a dress instead but the woman insisted they were just as expensive as buying a new one. She added: "I feel guilty for declining the invitation, and some of our mutual friends have also expressed disappointment in my decision.

"I understand that weddings are important events and it's important to show support for your friends, but I also feel like it's unreasonable to expect everyone to buy expensive clothes just for one occasion, and in my case, on such short notice. It's one week to the wedding and I feel terrible."

However, many users were quick to side with the guest and agreed it was unreasonable of her friend to expect this of everyone, especially on a last minute basis. One person remarked: "That's not a dress code. 'Formal' is a dress code. 'Floor length purple or rose gown' is a costume specification."

Another person replied: "It's a bit much to dictate everything about the dress, down to colour."
