Woman recalls seeing 'horrendous' fire which ripped through roof of Cotgrave home

A woman has recalled the moment she looked outside to see a fire ripping through the roof of a home in Cotgrave.

Four crews using an aerial ladder platform were tasked with extinguishing a fire that began in the roof of a residential property in Flagholme at around 7pm on Tuesday, June 18.

Yvonne Barker, who has lived in the area for 45 years, said she saw "loads of smoke" rising from the roof as firefighters used the ladder platform to access blaze from above.

"It was horrendous," the 67-year-old said. "My husband went to the front and said 'oh Christ'. There was loads of smoke coming from the roof.

"They [the firefighters] had to make sure all the rest of the people in the row of houses were safe so they got them all out. They were brilliant.

"I've never seen anything like it before. As long as everyone is okay. It's just a shame about all their possessions."

Another resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said her neighbour heard "crackling timber" as the roof burned.

She said: "There were police and fire and someone from the ambulance. They had closed all this road up to the top.

"They were really good. They were using the ladder to get into the roof and they were in there for a couple of hours.

"The smoke damaged two of the houses next door I think. My neighbour let this elderly couple stay at theirs for a cup of tea while it was happening."

Fire fighters left the scene at 11.14pm and no injuries were reported.

A Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Crews from West Bridgford, London Road and Highfields were called to the scene of a house fire on Flagholme, Cotgrave at 7.09pm.

"The fire was located in roof space at the property. Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.

"No one was injured.

"Following the incident, crews from London Road and West Bridgford have been out in the area today providing community reassurance and engagement."
