Woman quit job to devote herself to mammoth search for missing dog

A woman has been reunited with her dog after quitting her job to devote herself to a 57-day search in a forest.

Carole King and husband Verne King realised their 7-year-old border collie, Katie, went missing at a dog-friendly hotel after a late night at stock car race in Kalispell, Montana, US.

She believed Katie was scared by a thunderstorm that swept through the area and wandered into the nearby Glacier National Park, according to the New York Times .

Carole, who is a postal carrier, decided to quit her job and set out on a desperate search with Verne, a retired law enforcement officer, throughout the neighbourhood in July.

She said: "Katie was just more important to me."

They made an appeal on Facebook groups and searched for Katie at night with night-vision goggles and animal traps.

They also left clothing in the forest in the hope that Katie could detect their scent.

After nearly two months, Carole was told by a neighbour who had seen a dog that looked like Katie outside his window.

She rushed over to the neighbour's house and found her beloved Border collie under a tree, appearing dehydrated and much thinner.

Video shows Carole driving back home with Katie sitting on the passenger's seat.

Katie looked out and barked in enthusiasm as Verne waited outside the house to greet them.

Verne showered Katie with love and gave her a big kiss on the head.

Carole thanked the local community for helping them to search for Katie.

She said: "We can't believe that community up there.

"I got out of it sheer kindness from people - from a stranger to a stranger."
