Woman put off new role over receptionist's 'inappropriate' question before interview

A woman was left outraged after she claims she was "discriminated" against at a job interview.

In a post shared on Reddit, an anonymous woman shared screenshots of a plumbing job she applied to via Indeed and the emails she sent to the job’s company.

The first screenshot shows the woman was contacted by someone through the job portal, Indeed, who asked her if she was interested in a job as a plumbing mechanic.

A role, which, according to the posting, required two years of plumbing experience and had a salary of $24 to $34 an hour.

After submitting her application, she was invited to attend an interview, where the receptionist made some inappropriate comments.

"I arrive on time for my interview and introduced myself to the receptionist, [name redacted]," the email read. "She said to me, ‘Oh, I was expecting a man.'"

After filling out a couple of forms, the receptionist escorted her to the conference room, where she was told there was "no way that [the Reddit poster] would be paid" the wage she requested.

"She read on the application that I had written $24 as a wage I would accept,” the message continued.

"She told me there is no way that I would be paid $24, as I did not have enough experience as a plumber."

The woman pointed out that her CV clearly stated that she has been a plumber's helper for five years and that she is enrolled in an apprenticeship program.

She also noted how the company approached her about the job, not the other way around.

However, she said that she was "not offered a position."

Reddit users were quick to share their thoughts on the incident, with many being disappointed at the receptionist's behaviour.

One person said: "Honestly, as a woman, who has had to deal with many men talking down to me like I'm ignorant or just plain stupid when I've needed something trade-related done (HVAC, car, plumbing, etc). I would legitimately be thrilled to see a woman hopping out of a car."

Another wrote: "'I was expecting a man.'

"'Oh, well I was expecting to be interviewed by someone with basic cognitive ability. Looks like we both lose out!'"

A third commented: "I got pushed out of the landscaping business because everyone expected me to be a man and were uncomfortable with a woman doing yard work. People just suck."

Someone else said: "As a woman, I would prefer a female plumber. Those companies are missing a big opportunity to make bank."
