A woman in China who exposed her husband for cheating has been given an unusual punishment by a judge after she was ordered to make an apology video and keep it online for 15 consecutive days. However, she was able to use the “apology” video to further humiliate the husband and expose even more of his misdeeds.
The judge ruled that the woman, whose surname is Niu, had defamed her husband by naming and shaming him and exposing his alleged infidelity. She claimed that he had been engaged in a fiver-year long affair with a female colleague according to Chinese outlets. However, she has since gone viral for her sarcastic videos directed towards her partner.
Around September last year Niu posted the names of her husband, the colleague, and even the workplace, on social media. She claimed that the post was a “last resort” and that she was trying to warn others and expose the truth. However, Niu’s husband would respond to her claims with a defamation lawsuit which he would ultimately win.
According to an article from Mothership.sg it was determined that Niu had gone beyond legitimate rights protections when she published the couple’s names online. She was ordered to delete her posts and post a public apology video and keep it online for 15 days. The video would have to first be approved by the court.
Niu gets creative with her “apology” video
In line with the order given to her by the judge, she began posting the daily apology videos on her Douyin account. The first video, which was posted on January 12th is titled, “I admit my mistake and obey the judgment.” The video quickly went viral with many sympathizing with Niu. The following videos begin including more details and even take on a sarcastic tone.
Niu attached images of the court verdict as well as proof of her allegations against her husband such as transaction records which showed expensive purchases intended for the other woman.
However, she kept it vague, allowing viewers to interpret her meaning rather than outright saying it and risking another defamation lawsuit. She made veiled accusations instead saying things like, “meeting both material and physical needs of the employee,” and “true love.” She also included sarcastic remarks referring to the other woman as a “good secretary.”
This is a classic case of malicious compliance, technically following the orders of the judge but still getting to expose her husband for his alleged affair, and people on social media are loving it. People encouraged her to give more details and others praised her clever way of getting around the court decision.
Niu’s videos have all received around 300,000 likes or more and her following count currently sits at around half a million. Hopefully this influx of attention doesn’t get her in any more trouble.
