Woman pulled from River Shannon after dramatic rescue operation in Co Limerick

A garda and two members of the public rushed to help a woman who was seen floating in a river this afternoon.

The woman was spotted entering the water at the Lock Gates, Sarsfield Bridge, Limerick city shortly after 4.30pm.

A passing garda and two people helped the woman while they waited for the arrival of the specialist Limerick Fire service rescue team.

A source said: "Three fire engines responded with in three minutes and the Fire Service's Rescue Boat, Fire Swift rushed to the scene.

"Two fire fighters then swam to the woman and pulled her from the water.

"She was taken onboard the fire service boat and they were also assisted by Limerick Marine Rescue also.

"She was taken to a nearby pontoon at Sarsfield House where paramedics treated her for hypothermia."

Sources have said she will make a full recovery.
