Woman pulled from river in Carmarthen is seriously ill in hospital

A woman is in serious condition in hospital after being pulled from a river in Carmarthen.

Emergency services located the woman near Lesneven Bridge in the town shortly before 1pm on Thursday.

She was carried in a rescue boat down the Towy river and brought onto land in an area known as The Quay.

Police, fire crews and the ambulance service have all been in attendance, leaving the scene at around 2.20pm.

Police have confirmed that the woman has been taken to hospital and that she is in a serious condition.

A spokeswoman for the Welsh Ambulance Service said: "We were called today (30 January, 2020) at approximately 12:49pm to reports of a medical emergency near Carmarthen Leisure Centre.

"We responded with one emergency ambulance and one rapid response vehicle. One patient was transported to Glangwili Hospital.”

The river has also been the scene this week of searches for missing man Michael O’Leary, who disappeared in the area on Monday night.

Specialist dive teams have been in the River Towy throughout Thursday.

Police confirmed on Thursday that a man had been arrested as part of their enquiries into the search for Mr O'Leary.

A spokeswoman for Dyfed-Powys Police said: “A 52-year-old man from the Carmarthen area has been arrested as a result of enquiries, and is in police custody. The family have been updated in respect of this development, and are being supported by specialist officers."
