A woman says she was denied boarding of an American Airlines flight because she was wearing a see-through mask.

Tarus Woelk says a gate agent refused to let her board the flight in Charlotte, North Carolina, because of the type of mask she was wearing.

“’You can’t wear that, you have to wear a different mask,’ I said, ‘well why?’” explained Ms Woelk to FOX46.

“‘Well, I can see your mouth.’”

When Ms Woelk refused to swap her own mask for a disposable one she was denied entry to the flight, which was going to Richmond, Virginia.

“I was like, ‘can you just take a minute and look at this? It’s a Shema mask, it’s used by professional athletes. It has a factor of 97 instead of 95. It’s more effective than what you want me to wear.’”

Me Woelk said she believed she had followed all regulations set out by the airline.

“It just caused a huge mess. I’m wearing a mask. I’m being compliant,” she said.

The Independent has reached out to American Airlines for comment.

The airlines mask policy prevents passengers from wearing a mask made of mesh or lace, or from having an exhaust valve or vent.
