Woman pleads for return of precious signed book donated to charity by mistake

A woman is appealing to charity shop bargain hunters after she donated her prized signed copy of a novel by her favourite author by mistake.

Louise Gurowich had fulfilled a long-standing ambition to meet one of her heroes - writer Caitlin Moran - and the personal signature and little drawing on her copy of her book How To Be Famous was one of Louise’s most beloved things.

She met the author at a bookshop event at the Bath Forum in September last year, and had a good chat. Caitlin Moran even doodled a moustache on the girl on the front cover, before signing a personal message to Louise inside.

But three weeks ago, in the confusion and haste of changing jobs and moving home, the book ended up in the wrong pile and was inadvertently donated to the British Heart Foundation charity shop on Gloucester Road in Bishopston.

When she realised her mistake, she swiftly rushed from her new home in Montpelier to the store, but the book had gone - either sold to someone else, or gone to a different BHF charity shop in Bristol and sold there, or sitting on a shelf.

So now Louise is asking for everyone in Bristol to look out for the distinctive book - or for the person who bought it to get in touch. She’s even offering a reward for the book’s safe return to her bookshelf.

“I met her in September last year and she was great and personally had a chat with everyone, including doodling the moustache on the front of my book,” she said.

“I was bereft when I realised I’d been so careless! I will pay to have it back,” she added.

If anyone knows of the whereabouts of Louise’s copy of How To Be Famous by Caitlin Moran, please email her on louise.gurowich@gmail.com or call Bristol Live on 0117 934 3331.
