Woman 'petrified' after house set on fire while she was in bed

A woman was "absolutely petrified" after her house was set on fire while she slept upstairs.

Yesterday evening, a house on Kingswood Avenue, Waterloo was wrongly targeted in an arson attack to the horror of the young occupants. Neighbours heard a "loud bang" after 9pm followed by the sound of someone running down the road.

Police and Merseyside Fire and Rescue were called to the scene shortly afterwards, closing the road. Police confirmed today a brick was thrown through the window of the house, and the front door was set on fire.

Neighbours reported seeing around five police vehicles alongside those of the fire service attend the scene. A matrix van and a police dog team was also spotted

A young woman who lives in the house said she was in bed at the time of the attack. She told the ECHO: "We’ve got no idea why it happened. We’re absolutely petrified. We were upstairs in bed when it happened.

"We’ve only just moved into this house about a year ago."

Detective inspector Paul Gillies said: "We believe that this incident was a case of mistaken identity, and the occupants are being supported by officers as we look to find who was responsible.

"For someone to endanger lives in such a reckless way is absolutely despicable, and we are keen to hear from anyone who saw unfamiliar people acting suspiciously in the area around 9.30 last night.

"So if you live locally and have home CCTV, dashcam or doorbell devices, please check these as any detail may be pivotal in our investigation, as well as any information to identify those involved."
