Woman on mobility scooter rescued after falling in river while feeding ducks

A woman on a mobility scooter had to be rescued by the coastguard after she fell into a river while feeding the ducks.

The scooter was also recovered by firefighters who attended the incident at Newton Abbot Town Quay on Sunday afternoon.

The woman managed to safely get ashore whilst the scooter was pulled up, reports DevonLive.

Coastguard members from Torbay, Solent and Teignmouth and firefighters all attended.

A post on the Torbay Coastguard Facebook page said: "We were tasked by Solent Coastguard to assist Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service with a vehicle upside down in the river at Newton Abbot Quay, Teignmouth Coastguard were also tasked.

"A female was feeding the ducks on her mobility scooter when it fell into the river she managed to get ashore safely whilst the DFR recovered her scooter.

"Remember in a coastal emergency, if it's at Sea, Beach, Harbour, Coastal Path/Cliff or Tidal River. DIAL 999 AND ASK FOR THE COASTGUARD."

A similar incident happened in Exeter last week, where a woman on a mobility scooter fell in the River Exe.

The woman had driven the scooter from the flood relief slipway and landed in around 12 inches of water.

Firefighters had to use a reach pole and water rescue equipment to get her out.

Her electric scooter also retrieved from water by fire crews from Danes Castle.

She was then taken to the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital by ambulance.
