Woman 'off her face' following cocaine and booze binge 'blew kisses' at man after glassing him

A woman who went on a cocaine and alcohol-fuelled binge hurled a glass at a complete stranger in a busy bar.

Katie Murphy launched the sickening attack on the victim, who was innocently enjoying a drink with his friends.

The glass narrowly missed his right eye, but caused him significant injuries which will leave him permanently scarred.

Murphy, 30, of Stonyfield, Netherton, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court for sentencing after pleading guilty to causing grievous bodily harm without intent, the Liverpool Echo reports.

She had previously admitted she was 'off her face' after a cocaine and alcohol binge which started the night before the attack on the evening of October 10 last year.

CCTV taken at the Masquerade bar in Liverpool showed the victim chatting and drinking with friends at the bar.

Suddenly, while he is looking down at his phone, he is approached by Murphy, who 'swilled' a drink at him and smashed the glass in his face.

She then bizarrely 'blew two kisses' at the victim before leaving.

Chris Hopkins, prosecuting, said: "[The victim] described a hand appearing with a glass which was thrust into his face. The glass broke with the impact.

"He bled profusely and was left with a jagged wound. He was taken to hospital and needed four internal stitches and 10 external stitches above his right eye."

In his victim statement, the man said the attack in the popular bar had left him with a visible scar to his forehead, and he had become conscious of the way he looked.

He added: "I had a bubbly, happy nature before this happened, but I am now more nervous around people. I still don't know why it was me she did it to. Maybe it was mistaken identity, maybe she just didn't like the look of me.

"The injury was very close to my eye and it could have been a lot worse."

He bravely said he had "forgiven" his attacker.

Mike Hagerty, defending, said Murphy accepted the victim of her attack was "wholly innocent."

He added: "The defendant has a significant mental health problem, including a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia, which is exacerbated by the use of drugs and alcohol. She has expressed regret and is remorseful."

Judge Recorder Richard Leiper QC told Murphy she had caused serious harm by using the equivalent of a weapon.

He sentenced Murphy to 30 weeks in prison, suspended for 18 months. During that time, she was ordered to undergo a mental health and a drug rehabilitation programme, along with 120 hours of unpaid work.
