Woman mauled to death by her dogs at a shelter where they were being quarantined

A woman has been mauled to death by her own dogs at an animal shelter where they were being quarantined for biting someone else.

Johana Villafane, 33, was attacked by her two pit bulls when she was with the dogs in the exercise area of O'Connor Animal Hospital in Irving, Texas on March 23.

Police attended the scene but were unable to reach her as the pair of dogs were relentlessly attacking Ms Villafane's bloodied body.

They were forced to shoot and kill the dogs due to the 'aggressive behaviour' of the pit bulls.

He said law enforcement thought they were his dogs as they saw them going in and out of his fence.

"I said 'no', it's the neighbour's dogs...they broke through into my yard earlier and they said 'well they bit somebody when they got out'," Dickey explained.

Before the dogs escaped and bit someone, Dickey said they seemed friendly but rough.

"They had always seemed friendly but aggressively friendly if you will. Jumping on you...and they were pretty sizable dogs," he said.

An investigation into Ms Villafane's death has launched as the police attempted to find out what may have caused the dogs to attack her.
