Woman married to man for eight months gets £110,000 in divorce

A man whose marriage broke down after eight months must pay his estranged wife £110,000, a family court judge has ruled.

District Judge John Smart heard that the man, a business unit manager in his 50s who pockets nearly £4,000 a month, and woman had married in the summer of 2017 and separated by early 2018.

The woman, who is in her 40s, had been living on state benefits and in rented accommodation before their relationship began

They had moved into his home, in south-west London, after marrying and he had helped her pay off debts.

She wanted to walk away with a lump sum of nearly £160,000, he had offered £30,000.

The man had told the judge that he would have to borrow to raise the money he had offered to pay.

He said his West Ham season ticket “might have to go”.

Judge Smart concluded that she should get £110,000.

He said that would enable the purchase of a shared ownership flat, or houseboat to live in.

The judge has outlined his decision, in a ruling published online, following a recent hearing in a Kingston-upon-Thames family court.

He did not name the couple involved.
