PUNE: A crook posing as a cellphone company executive duped a woman from Wakad of Rs1.49 lakh on the pretext of updating her SIM card.
The suspect told her to download a remote access app on her smartphone and gained access to her gadget. He then siphoned off the amount from her bank account. The woman on Saturday registered a case against the man with the Wakad police.
“On January 6, the woman received a call from a person claiming to be the customer care executive from the mobile company,” an officer from the Wakad police told TOI. “He had told the woman that she needed to update her SIM card. He told her to recharge her connection for Rs10. After that, the person told the woman to download the remote access app on her smartphone,” said the officer.
“The money was transferred to a public sector bank account,” the officer added.
