Woman 'living in fear' after finding a mouse in her bed

A Wigan woman is 'living in fear' after finding a mouse in her bed.

Zoe Pierce says her home has been plagued by the tiny pests for the last three weeks, leaving her struggling to eat and sleep.

The vermin have been spotted crawling across her kitchen floor and worktops, and even chewing through food packaging in her kitchen.

Ms Pierce, 27, said: "I cannot sleep or eat because I am living in fear.

Zoe Pierce says she is living in fear because of a mouse infestation at her home (UGC)

"They are climbing up my fridge and over my kitchen sides.

"I pulled the quilt on my bed back the other day and there was a baby mouse in there.

"I will not move from the couch when I am in the house in case I see one."

Ms Pierce says she has also experienced difficulty breathing recently, which she claims doctors have put down to inhaling dust from mice droppings.

She believes communal bins at the side of her flat are to blame for the rats.

Wigan Council's pest control team have visited Ms Pierce's home in Miller's Lane, Platt Bridge, in a bid to get rid of the infestation, but to no avail.

If anything, she says the problem has become worse.

"They are just not going away," Ms Pierce said.

"It is affecting my mental health. I have called the council since, but they said it was not an emergency because they are not rats.

"I found one dead on my kitchen floor recently and had to pay someone to come and take it away because I am terrified of them."

In an another attempt to get rid of the pests once, Ms Pierce recently bought a dog but says that has not worked either.

"I thought the dog would catch them", she explained. "But it is scared of them as well.

"We are being told to self-isolate so it is even worse with me being here all day.

"They used to come out in the night, but now they are coming out during the day. It is just getting worse and something needs to be done."

A Wigan Council spokesperson said: “Despite running a limited service due to staff being redeployed or self-isolating, the resident has been visited twice in the last month and will be again this week.

“The council is making every effort to attend all reported pest cases as soon as possible during these challenging times.

“We will continue to support the resident with our procedures and treatments for dealing with mice to hopefully eradicate the problem.

“As a general reminder to residents in the run up to summer, there are a number of simple steps that can be taken to help keep homes pest free.

“These include making sure the exterior of your home is in a good state of repair, checking any outside drains and gullies are clear and to not leave open food out in the kitchen overnight.”
