Woman left with potentially life-changing injuries after car crashes into tree in Northumberland

A young woman has suffered potentially life-changing injuries following a serious collision in Northumberland.

Police have launched an investigation after the one-vehicle collision on the A1068 near Ellington on Sunday.

Officers were called to the scene by the ambulance service shortly after 1am after a black Skoda Fabia travelling southbound towards the roundabout with Front Street had come off the road and veered into a tree.

A 20-year-old female passenger suffered a broken spine, as well as a broken ankle, foot, leg and wrist.

She remains in a stable condition in hospital, police say.

The male driver, 18, sustained minor injuries to his face and body.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "Enquiries are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision and police are now appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

"Officers want to speak to anyone who was travelling near Ellington in the early hours of yesterday and who may have seen a black Skoda Fabia travelling in the area at that time.

"They have also asked drivers to check any dashcam footage as they look to build a clearer picture of what caused the collision.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact police via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of our website or by calling 101 quoting log 71 170121."
