Woman left with no cash to feed her dog overwhelmed by message from kind stranger

An owner unable to feed her dog until her next pay day has been left overwhelmed by the support she have received from complete strangers.

Turning to Reddit for advice, the owner explained how she was a few scoops away from using up all her of dog's food - and was unable to stock up for about seven days.

She said: "He generally eats Nutro Limited Ingredient because of some allergy issues he had when he was younger, but I'm about two days away from being out of that and I don't get paid again for over a week.

"My question is will he be okay eating mainly brown rice, pinto beans, and potatoes. That's basically everything I have in my pantry for the majority of a week?

"I just started rationing what food he has left so he can at least get a half cup of that plus 1.5 cups of beans and rice as his twice daily meal."

Knowing the normal recommendation is "chicken and rice", she went on to explain how she is unable to afford any meat until she gets paid. She added: 'I'm just worried about him and angry at myself for getting into this situation. He's basically all I have in this world.

"I have looked into charities and because of my location there are none nearby. I don't have the petrol to make it to the nearest real city, which is 40 miles away."

After opening up about her situation online, kindhearted strangers stepped in to offer to pay for her seven-year-old dog's food.

One user said: "If you PM me your address, I'll send you that bag of dog food from Chewy."

Another added: "I’d like to pitch in on this as well, if you don’t mind sending me your address too."

A third said: "Same, except from Amazon. Send me that addy! I only require that you also send me some photos of him gobbling it down."

In an update, she said: "Due to the generosity of strangers it looks like my dog, Pete, and I will be okay until payday.

"When I was younger I was quite a cynic in life but the kindness and empathy of strangers has really given me hope for the future in recent times."

The RSPCA Knowledge Base has warned dog owners about the dangers of feeding their pets toxic foods, saying it could leave their dog in intense pain.

A statement reads: "Do not ever feed the following substances as they are toxic to dogs (note this is not a complete list), alcohol, onions, onion powder, garlic, chocolate, coffee or caffeine products, mouldy or spoiled foods or compost, avocado, bread dough, yeast dough, grapes, raisins, sultanas (including in Christmas cakes), currants, nuts (including macadamia nuts), fruit stones or ‘pits’ (e.g. mango seeds, apricot stones, avocado stones), mushrooms, and fruit seeds.

"Also, never feed the following as these can be dangerous for dogs: corncobs, green unripe tomatoes, cooked bones, small pieces of raw bone, fatty trimmings/fatty foods, salt and roughly-cut vegetables.

"Also ensure your pet dog doesn’t have access to string wrappings around rolled roasts or absorbent pads found under meat when wrapped on trays."
