Woman left two friends with broken bones for 'having no manners'

A woman left two friends with broken bones during a mass brawl which began after she accused them of having no manners. The attack was unprovoked and left one victim feeling "ashamed" of her appearance.

Kaylie Nightingale, 26, assaulted Danya Marsden and Alesha Pearce in Blaenavon town centre on August 23, 2020. The victims had been at a party and were walking in the street when the defendant and a man stepped off the pavement to let them pass.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Tuesday heard Nightingale had told the victims "Learn some manners" before an argument broke out. The defendant then said: "I am going to f****** knock you out."

Prosecutor Paul Hewett described Nightingale swinging her fist into the left side of Ms Marsden's face. She then grabbed Ms Pearce by the hair and they ended up on the floor, while continuing to hit and punch her.

As a result of the assault, both of the victim sustained broken bones, scram marks and bruises. In a victim personal statement, Ms Marsden said: "I've tried to forget about it but suddenly I start crying. I've lost confidence and won't go out with my daughter alone. The day afterwards I had to attend a friend's mother's funeral and I was ashamed and embarrassed of my injuries. I was in so much pain. I spent time in my bedroom hiding my injuries. I had to have a month off work because of my injuries."

Nightingale, of Granby Close, Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, later pleaded guilty to two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. In mitigation, David Leathley said his client had an "ill favoured life". At the age of 18 she woke up to find her partner had died next to her, she later ended up in a controlling relationship and also became severely ill after contracting sepsis.

Recorder Mark Cotter KC sentenced Nightingale to nine months imprisoned suspended for 18 months. She was also ordered to carry out a 15 day rehabilitation activity requirement.
