Woman knifed brother in random attack as he tried to help with pet fish

A woman who knifed her brother as he helped her with her pet fish has been told to seek treatment for mental health issues.

Ann-Marie Bradwell, 42, was in her Southfleet Avenue residence in Fleetwood when her brother Kevin arrived on March 8 2021, Lancs Live reports.

After assisting her with the aquarium, the pair went into the living to watch TV.

However, Mr Bradwell went to check on his sister after she disappeared into the kitchen for 20 minutes.

She demanded her sibling get out of the kitchen, but as he went to leave, Bradwell turned on her brother and stabbed him with a flick knife.

Mr Bradwell pushed his sister onto the floor and held onto her arms to restrain her but she got up and followed him out of the house, stabbing him again close to the garden gate.

As he walked away from the address, Mr Bradwell met another family member who went with him to his mother's house and called the police.

Mr Bradwell was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital where he was treated for three small stab wounds to his arm and shoulder.

Officers went to Ann-Marie's house and spotted her through a window. But when she saw the police, Bradwell shouted at them to stay away, making stabbing motions towards her stomach.

Friends arrived and contacted Ms Bradwell by telephone but she would not leave the house and officers forced entry, fearing for her safety.

Inside the house, Ms Bradwell confirmed she had injured herself and was taken to Royal Preston Hospital for treatment.

She pleaded guilty to Section 20 wounding and appeared at Preston Crown Court to be sentenced.

The court heard Bradwell has a number of physical and mental health problems and was going through a difficult period in her life following the death of her other brother at the time of the attack.

Recorder Woodward, sentencing, said: "I accept at that stage you were likely to have been in crisis by reason of your mental health disorder but it is quite clear that is exacerbated by substance and alcohol misuse, therefore although it may provide an explanation it provides no excuse for your behaviour."

The court heard Ms Bradwell's brother did not want to make a victim impact statement or ask for a restraining order as he did not want to upset family dynamics any further.

Recorder Woodward said: "You and your brother were fortunate that the wounds you inflicted did not cause more serious damage.

"The use of a knife gives rise to a very real risk of very serious injury or death."

Bradwell told the court she was willing to engage with mental health professionals to address her difficulties. She has spent six months on remand since her arrest - the equivalent of a 12-month jail term.

The judge handed her a 24-month community order with 35 days rehabilitation requirement and a six month mental health treatment plan.
