Feb. 23--A former rural Georgia sheriff's deputy was on the run Sunday night after killing his wife and wounding a sheriff and a deputy, state law enforcement officials told the Los Angeles Times.
Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell and an unidentified deputy were in stable condition after the shootings in Clarkesville, about 80 miles northeast of Atlanta, a county emergency management official told The Times.
Both were responding to a domestic call when Anthony Giaquinta, 40, opened fire, Sherry Lang, deputy director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, told The Times.
The sheriff and the deputy were taken to a hospital in Gainesville for treatment, Lang said.
Officials are scouring the area around the home in Clarkesville for Giaquinta, Lang said.
A spokesman for the Georgia State Police told The Times that the area was still "active" and that "the shooter is still at large."
A woman answering the phone at the Habersham County Sheriff's Office declined to comment and told The Times that no one there was available to provide further information.
A LinkedIn profile under Giaquinta's name said he had been working as a K9 officer at the sheriff's office since 2009, and he joined a company called Custom Canine in 2013, according to a news release from the company's site.
Giaquinta's capture of a fugitive was featured in this 2011 news story. Other news stories said he previously worked at the Gainesville Police Department.
