Woman killed on M61 after checking damage to her car

A 24-year-old woman has been killed by a lorry on the M61 after getting out of her car to check it for damage.

The woman had been involved in a minor collision with the central reservation near junction five of the M61, which had rendered her car unmovable, Greater Manchester Police said.

When she got out of her Ford Fiesta to check the damage to her car, she was involved in a collision with a heavy goods vehicle, police said.

Police were called to the scene at around 3:30am on Monday morning and found the woman who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said on Monday morning there is likely to be delays to motorists for some time as officers remained at the scene.

The motorway is a major commuter route into Manchester and drivers are being diverted from junction four northbound, the BBC reports.

Police Constable Paul Hailwood of the Greater Manchester Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “I would like to extend my most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of this young woman.

“We currently have specially trained officers working to provide them with any support they need at this tragic time.”

Police are appealing for anybody with any information about the incident to contact GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit.
