Woman shot to death while holding baby — but child wasn’t hurt

Brittany Hill

Someone who drove by the shooting took the woman to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where she was pronounced dead.

A woman was shot to death while holding a baby Tuesday in Austin on the West Side.

Brittany Hill, 24, was talking with two acquaintances outside a car in the 1200 block of North Mason Avenue while holding a one-year-old girl, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

Two males drove up in a silver Chevy Impala, got out of the car and shot Hill in the upper body about 8:50 a.m., authorities said.

During the incident, Hill tried to hide behind other parked vehicles while shielding the baby, authorities said. Someone who drove by took her to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where she was pronounced dead at 9:25 a.m.

The baby wasn’t injured and is with other family members, police said. Officials didn’t say if the baby was related to the 24-year-old. Hill lived in the block where she was shot.

Activist Ja’Mal Green called Hill a “hero.”

“[W]hen she saw the shooter she shielded her 1-year-old and saved her life and fell on top of her,” Green wrote on Facebook. “She loved her kids, now you’re their hero from heaven!”

Police are investigating the shooting as a targeted attack and have found the silver Chevy Impala connected to the shooting.
