Woman killed in single-vehicle car crash in Co Longford named locally

A woman who was tragically killed in a road collision on Sunday has been named locally as Rose Gibney.

Rose, who was in her 30s, died following the incident in Castlenugent at around 10.30am yesterday morning.

She was the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tributes have been paid to the young woman today, who is from Ballynameagh in Castlepollard, Co Westmeath.

She is deeply regretted by her parents Maura and Pat, brothers Patrick, Matt and James, and sisters Jane and Anne, as well as other relatives, neighbours and friends.

Members of the local community have extended their sympathies to the Gibney family, saying their thoughts are with the bereaved following their terrible loss.

One person said: "Shocked and saddened to hear the tragic news. May God give the Gibney family strength to bear this [very] heavy cross.

"So so sad to hear this. Rose was a lovely girl. My condolences and deepest sympathies to the whole family."

Others added: "My deepest sympathies to all the family, shocked and saddened to hear of the loss of such a beautiful young woman."

"Absolutely devastated to read this sending all my love to your poor family... thinking of you all. Sweet dreams Rose.

"Shocking news. Deepest sympathy to Rose's family. Thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very sad time."

The details for Rose's funeral are set to be announced at a later date.

Gardai are continuing to investigate the crash, and are appealing for witnesses to come forward with information.

It comes as tributes were also paid today to a second woman killed in a crash over the weekend.

Laoise Nolan Crawford was a passenger in a car was involved in a collision in the early hours of Saturday in Co Cavan.

She was remembered by friends and family as "a spirited young lady with a twinkle in her eye and a lust for life".
