Woman killed in crash: baby rescued from the wreckage

A 29-year-old woman has died in a motor vehicle accident at Lake Munmorah on the Central Coast at about 8.15pm on Friday, police said.

Witnesses freed a five-month-old girl from the woman's Toyota Landcruiser.

Police allege a southbound Subaru WRX collided with the northbound Landcruiser "before the Toyota struck a power pole".

The driver of the Toyota died at the scene of the accident, which occurred on the Pacific Highway near Colongra Bay Road.

Many consider this section of highway to be perilous, as it includes a small strip of road linking both sides of the highway, so motorists can turn across the busy route.

The driver of the Subaru, a 34-year-old man, was taken to John Hunter Hospital under police guard for mandatory testing and observation. His 28-year-old male passenger sustained minor injuries.
