Woman killed in Glass House Mountains cliff fall

The 58-year-old died at the Glass House Mountains after climbing Mt Ngungun.

A woman has died after falling down a cliff while hiking on a recently opened mountain path on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.

The 58-year-old fell 50 metres down Mount Ngungun, landing in an inaccessible area.

A bushwalker spotted the woman's backpack on a ledge at the top of the mountain and called authorities about 10:00am.

Fire crews climbed up to reach the woman and paramedics tried to revive her, but she died at the scene.

Police have described the terrain as difficult and are asking the public to be cautious when climbing.

"We're currently undertaking an investigation as to the circumstances surrounding how she has fallen off the mountain," Acting Senior Sergeant Trevor Mills said.

The popular Mt Ngungun summit track is advertised online as a graded path that leads through a steep, rocky gully and can be completed with relative ease.
