A 19-year-old woman has died after she and three others were hit by an out-of-control car as they walked on a footpath in Wollongong in NSW.
Emergency workers were called to Princes Highway about 10.30pm on Saturday, and found the woman with multiple critical injuries and two others also hurt.
The woman died in Wollongong Hospital, police said.
An 18-year-old woman remains in the hospital with a fractured pelvis while a 21-year-old man is being treated for a fractured leg and ribs.
A 20-year-old male pedestrian escaped injury.
Officers have been told a sedan driver lost control and struck the four as they walked on the footpath.
The driver, an 18-year-old man, and front seat passenger, a 21-year-old man, were arrested and taken to Wollongong Hospital for mandatory testing.
The driver is being treated for minor injuries and remains under police guard, along with the passenger.
A second passenger has also been assisting police with their inquiries.
Emergency services described the fatal accident as "carnage".
"There was a lot of patients lying around," NSW Ambulance Acting Inspector Oliver Aleman told the Illawarra Mercury.
"It's a horrible scene to come to."
