Woman killed after being hit by truck in Cork city named as 'lovely' newsagent worker

A woman killed after being hit by a truck yesterday evening has been named locally.

Maeve Murphy was walking in the Smith Street area of Cork city at around 3.50pm on February 10 when she was tragically struck by a lorry.

Mrs Murphy, in her 50s, worked in the Mall newsagents on the South Mall in the city and was popular and well-known by the community, Cork Beo reports.

Hailing from the northside of the River Lee, she walked to and from work on the busy Mall each day and was a friendly face for customers.

A note on the front door of the shop today read: "With great sadness we have learned of Maeve's sudden death.

"Sadly she was knocked down on her way home from work.

"May she rest in peace."

Regulars and fellow workers in the area paid tribute to Maeve on social media, describing her as a "lovely person".

Gardai are continuing investigations into the tragic event and are hoping CCTV from the area as well as any dashcam footage people may have could help them.

A spokesperson said: "Gardaí are investigating a fatal road traffic collision involving a truck and a pedestrian that occurred in the Smith Street area of Cork City on 10/02/2020 at approximately 3:50pm.

"A female pedestrian, aged in her 50s, was taken to Cork University Hospital by ambulance where she was later pronounced dead. A technical examination of the scene has been carried out.

"Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information, particularly any road users who may have dash cam footage of the area from the time of the collision, to contact Gardaí at Anglesea Street on 021 452 2000 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111."
