Woman killed after being hit by car on the A48 between Cardiff and Newport

A woman was killed after being hit by a car on the A48.

Police were called to the scene in Castleton at around 1.45pm on Tuesday after reports of a serious crash.

Gwent Police said the crash involved a grey Volkswagen Fox and a female pedestrian. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

A police spokesman said there were no reported injuries to the driver of the car.

Officers are now investigating the circumstances of the crash.

The road was closed between Coal Pit lane and Marshfield road.

A police spokesman said: "We would thank motorists for their patience and understanding in congestion in the area and surrounding routes.

"The road re-opened at approximately 6.30pm [Tuesday] evening.

Officers are requesting any motorists that used the road around the time of the collision, to please check any dash cam footage that may provide further information that will assist officers with their enquiries."

The air ambulance and a number of ambulance crews were also called to the scene.
